Flash Back: Sir Victor Uwaifo – Joromi + Guitar Boy (Mami Water)

This week on our Flash Back music series, we took it way back to the 60s!!!

Jaminpitakwa.com present to you the 1966 huge hits, Joromi and Guitar Boy (Mami Water) performed by veteran African musician and music professor, Victor Efosa Uwaifo who records under the name Sir Victor Uwaifo.

Sir Victor Uwaifo (born 1 March 1941) is a Nigerian musician, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor. He also served as commissioner for arts and culture in Edo State under the government of Lucky Igbinedion. Uwaifo is currently signed under 2face Idibia’s Hypertek Digital.

The song "Joromi" has legendary status among his fans and won him the historical first Golden record in Nigeria, West Africa and Africa (presented by Philips, West Africa).

Guitar Boy was inspired by an encounter (which he has long maintained actually occurred) with a "mami water" (mermaid) while lounging on Bar Beach, Lagos, apparent by the lyrics - “Guitar boy, if you see mami water, never, never you run away… Never run away Victor Uwaifo, if you see mami water, never, never you run away… Sing her song of love, sweet melody” Those were the acclaimed words of the mermaid to the legend…
